Dennis Hermosilla founded the deli in September 2013 after he retired. While his career had led him through the public school system, Dennis always wanted to own his own business. The Hermosilla family had previously owned a market in the historic downtown and was open from the early 1900’s to the 1980’s. Unfortunately, the original Hermosilla’s Market closed after the family grew older which left no one to run it. The historic market is where Dennis pulled inspiration his from. A lover of food and a great chef, the deli was his dream and his passion.
Sadly, Dennis passed away last April from pancreatic cancer. The family continues his legacy by continuing the deli. His wife Patty Hermosilla owns it, and his children Nick Hermosilla, Ali Gross, and Dominica West run the family business. While a lot of people their ages may be working for a corporate job, as a family the are building the deli from the ground up. Every day they get to work together, and together they have seen it grow within the community. Potentially, the deli will expand soon, possibly serving Bridgeport as they do in Fairmont.
The Hermosilla family has focused on eating healthy food since the mid 1990’s when Patty decided to make a huge shift in the family’s diet. She got rid of the microwave, tossed the soda, and they began eating “health food.” Back then, health food wasn’t what it is today, but Patty persevered even with the complaints of three young children. This became a way of life for the Hermosilla family and continues to be a focus within the deli. Patty and her children believe that food feeds the body and one must feed your body the best of the best. As a family, they strive to eat local, organic, and process-free and wanted to bring some of those goals into the business.
Finding healthy food is nearly impossible in Fairmont and West Virginia. The family wanted a place where people could come and have the ability to have a healthy lunch and to provide healthy options for their family.
Hermosilla’s Deli Market offers many healthy options. They have a large quantity of naturally sweetened drinks, with cane sugar and stevia options. They have a variety of Kombucha drinks as well as PH 9 Essentia Water. There is a salad/olive bar always features organic romaine, kale, and cherry tomatoes. When the local farmer’s markets are opened the salad bar is filled exclusively with veggies and toppings from them. And sandwiches are made with Troyer meats that are free from any soy, dairy, or MSG. There are five meat options that are additionally nitrate free (Pan Roasted Turkey, Cajun Turkey, Oven Roasted Chicken, Kettle Fried Chicken, and Hickory Smoked Ham.) All of the Troyer Cheeses are free from nitrates, MSG, and soy. Hermosilla’s Deli also stocks Gluten Free Bread and have recently introduced the option to add tofu to any veggie sandwich. You can choose from two different kinds of marinated tofu: a spicy and a seasoned Italian. There is also a fairly large allergy friendly section with items like dairy free cheeses, cookies, noodles, and tarts.
The focus on eating healthy in Morgantown is important to Hermosilla’s. The family says it shows a step in the right direction the both the tri-county area and the state in terms of health and wellness. While West Virginia has been known as unhealthy and inactive, the #EatHealthyMorgantown movement is a positive and much-needed change for West Virginia.
The Italian Veggie with roasted red peppers, homemade olive tapenade, homemade hot pepper mustard, and the house made seasoned tofu is divine. Not into tofu? Try the Kettle Fried Chicken with homemade hot pepper mustard and your choice of toppings.
