In today’s world, you’re exposed to a lot of toxins on a daily basis. Think about the sprays and detergents you use to clean your home and clothes, for example. These household solvents contain any number of chemicals stressors that may or may not be harmful to you.

Humans are exposed to a massive amount of chemical stress. We’ve become so used to chemicals and toxins that we don’t even think of them when discussing stress and issues that affect our health and mental clarity.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) has acknowledged that environmental pollution is the underlying cause of almost 80% of chronic degenerative diseases. That means materials and chemicals you come in contact with every day have the potential to impact your body’s biological functions.

In addition, findings from Boston Medical Center and the University of California link common chemical pollutants to at least 200 different diseases. There is a strong correlation between everyday chemical stressors and diseases, including:

  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Kidney disease
  • Heart disease
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Parkinson’s diseases
  • Diabetes
  • Bronchitis
  • Hyperactivity

These are just a few; there are many more issues that can arise from chemical pollutants. The study also links pollutants to 37 different types of cancer. And it’s estimated that chemical pollution is responsible for 30% of asthma cases, 10% of neurobehavioral disorders and 5% of pediatric cancers.

If you’re wondering what these chemicals are, the most common are found in:

  • Pesticides
  • Dyes
  • Synthetic Hormones
  • Fire retardants
  • Industrial chemicals
  • Chlorinated solvents

What can you do? Do not be afraid of this topic rather, take steps for yourself and your family.

    • Educate yourself

Score Card.org is a source for finding toxins specific to your area.

    • Make conscious decisions

Learn what chemicals have the biggest affect on you, from shampoo to laundry soap. Determine what products to eliminate from your life.

    • Choose local farmers and organic, fair-trade food producers

Decide what you are willing to spend extra money on for all-natural or organic foods, which often contain less pesticides and processed toxins.

    • Drink plenty of water

Use carbon filters at home and be sure your water supply is free from harmful contaminants. Drink the recommended amount of non-chlorinated water every day to help flush toxins from your body.

    • Use all natural personal care products

You can do this as a gradual process, but switch to all natural soaps, cosmetics, perfumes, detergents, lotions, deodorants, etc. These items come in direct contact with your skin – your body’s largest organ – and directly affect your other bodily systems.

    • Detox

Detoxing is not something you should do on your own or take lightly. Seek a qualified professional to help guide you through detoxing your body from chemicals.

There is a lot more to learn on this topic. Education, not fear, is the key. Find solutions to toxic problems when you are able, and continue to learn about the world around you – what you are putting on your body, breathing in and ingesting.
